Thermal Conductivity & Specific Heat Capacity Testing of Batteries

Battery performance and safety depend on how well heat moves through the cell and into the surrounding thermal management system. Whether you’re developing new electrode formulations, benchmarking cell designs, validating thermal management materials, or checking production consistency, reliable thermal property data is essential. Too often, those values are estimated, taken from literature, or measured on materials that no longer resemble the finished product. This webinar shows how to replace them with measured data, from the finished cell down to its individual components and the thermal management materials around it. Using the Trident Thermal Conductivity Instrument, we’ll walk through testing of full intact battery cells, individual materials such as cathodes and anodes, and the adhesives, potting compounds, insulation, and heat spreaders that carry heat away from them.

Direction is a central theme. Heat moves very differently through the layers of a cell than along them, and a single isotropic value can hide that difference. We’ll highlight the Transient Plane Source (TPS) Anisotropic utility, which separates axial (through-plane) and radial (in-plane) thermal conductivity and diffusivity from a single measurement on an intact cell.

Specific Heat TPS UtilityThat anisotropic analysis requires volumetric heat capacity as an input, which is where the new TPS Cp utility comes in. It measures the heat capacity of full battery cells non-destructively, with no sample coupons required. We’ll show how the two tests work together to deliver a set of thermal properties for design comparisons, performance evaluation, and thermal modeling, without altering the cell’s internal structure.

ZFW high-temperature Guarded Heat Flow MeterLastly, we’ll also look at battery separators at elevated temperature, where ZFW’s high-temperature Guarded Heat Flow Meter provides steady-state thermal conductivity data under conditions relevant to safety assessment.

Attendees will leave with a practical framework for matching each battery component to the right method, sample format, and heat flow direction, whether the goal is R&D, performance testing, or QA/QC.
