Trident™ Application Highlight: Measuring Specific Heat Capacity of Materials Using the TPS Cp Utility
This document highlights the use of the Transient Plane Source (TPS) Cp Utility for the nondestructive measurement of specific heat capacity across a range of material types.
Specific heat capacity (Cp) is a fundamental thermophysical property required for thermal simulation and system design. It determines how much energy a material absorbs per unit mass per degree of temperature rise. Access to Cp is also a prerequisite for anisotropic thermal conductivity separation using the TPS Anisotropy Utility, in which volumetric heat capacity (RhoCp) is required as an input.

Measurements were performed using the Trident Instrument equipped with the Transient Plane Source (TPS) sensor and the Cp Utility. A range of reference materials with known Cp values was tested at room temperature to validate the method. Distilled water was stabilized by adding 0.5 wt% agar-agar powder to prevent convection during measurement.
