Thermal Management of Tires to Improve Heat Resistance

Improving heat and wear resistance of tires is crucial to increasing tire longevity, increasing customer satisfaction, and reducing environmental impacts. Increasing wear / abrasion resistance of tires involves a multifaceted approach. In today’s competitive tire market abrasion resistance must be controlled through the use of appropriate fillers that can provide not only reinforcement but also heat dissipation. Increasing the thermal conductivity of a tire tread will help it dissipate damaging heat and protect the base polymer from premature aging. This paper evaluates how different fillers can increase thermal conductivity to improve heat and abrasion resistance and reduce premature aging of a tire tread compound.
