The viscoelastic glass transition of polymeric materials involves softening across three orders of magnitude in dynamic storage modulus (GPa to MPa) and the appearance of a large dissipation peak, which are critical to product applications. This webinar will highlight some important features of this behavior as revealed by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA).
The areas to be discussed are: influence of nano-filler reinforcement (and rubbery stiffness in general) on the loss tangent peak height in the glass transition temperature (Tg) region; whether Tg should be determined from the loss modulus peak or the loss tangent peak; characterizing immiscible blends of elastomers, including the effects of carbon black; and some considerations when attempting to create master curves using temperature-frequency superposition.
Dr. Chris Robertson is principal consultant at Polymer Technology Services LLC in Akron, Ohio (USA), a company that he founded in 2021 to provide technical consulting, training, and expert witness services for the rubber industry and the polymer technology field in general.
