Thermal Analysis of OLED Materials

Presented by Sarah Ackermann

Various OLED diodes. Thermal properties like heat capacity and thermal conductivity are necessary to further the research into the lifespan, degradation, and implementation of OLED technology.

Learn about advancements in thermal analysis and calorimetry in the field of OLEDs.

Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) technology has revolutionized digital display technologies in the past 20 years. OLEDs are also being used increasingly for solid-state lighting applications, like traffic lights, vehicle lights, and street lighting. Their lightweight structure and reliability make them especially attractive for applications where maintenance is challenging or hazardous. Typical lifespans for incandescent bulbs are only 750 hours and CFL bulbs are 8000 hours – by comparison, typical OLEDs have a lifespan of well over 10,000 hours.  Additionally, OLEDs avoid the use of toxic metals common to CFL and inorganic LED technologies.

However, OLEDs aren’t without their drawbacks: They are more prone to UV degradation, limiting their application in outdoor settings, and they aren’t as bright as competitive technologies. Recent research is focused on the dynamics of OLED degradation and how to make more reliable OLEDs, particularly in blue emittance devices.

This webinar will explore the use of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry in OLED research, with an emphasis on degradation under thermal stress and high vacuum like can be seen in deposition processes. Other tests, such as heat capacity and thermal conductivity, will also be discussed.
