Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) Testing and Measurement Services
Compliant with Many International Standard Test Methods
What is Dynamic Mechanical Analysis?
Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) is a technique used to study mechanical properties of objects, typically viscoelastic properties of polymer materials. Traditionally, this involves understanding the viscous and elastic mechanical properties of a polymeric material under a constant deflection. In this case, DMA is a powerful tool for monitoring the strain of a material when a dynamic sinusoidal stress is applied and allows the understanding of complex time dependent moduli.
What Industries use Dynamic Mechanical Analysis?
Common applications for DMA include, but are not limited to:
- Rubber and Tires
- Polymer Manufacturing
- Automotive
- Electronics
- Aerospace
- Construction
What Properties can you Measure with DMA?
Many time-, frequency- and temperature-dependent properties of polymers can be elucidated from DMA experimentation. The storage modulus (E’ or G’) of a material can be measured, along with the loss factor and angle. By modulating the temperature with respect to a constant stress, the glass transition temperature can also be measured. Fatigue experimentation can be used to track the changes within a polymer material as it is cyclically loaded and may shed insight into its long-term behaviour.
