Characterizing PCMs for Thermal Energy Storage and Improved Battery Thermal Management

Battery thermal management has become increasingly challenging as battery technology has improved. Owing to the higher energy density and large heats of reaction in battery materials, battery cycling generates a large amount of waste heat which needs to be managed to avoid overheating and device failure. Thermal energy storage (TES) with phase change materials (PCMs) is a new strategy to manage the waste heat generated in battery cycling.

Thermal Energy Storage is the collection of thermal energy for later use. Mechanisms for thermal energy storage include solar heat collectors, phase change materials (PCMs), eutectics and reversible chemical reactions. In most TES systems, increasing the effective thermal conductivity is considered a critical performance attribute among other qualities (higher heat storage capacity, and longer cycling stability etc.).

Join us online as we highlight some recent published works by researchers from Australia, Canada, USA, China and South Korea in studying composite phase change materials for thermal energy storage and battery thermal management applications. Work from Swinburne University of Technology, University of Windsor,Wayne State University, Southwest University of Science and Technology, China Academy of Engineering Physics and Soongsil University will be presented in highlighting application of C-Therm’s MTPS method for thermal conductivity characterization of PCMs.
